You hear people say, “Go with your gut,” a lot in life. A post at PM Student would agree with that attitude, as the author recounts a time where not listening to her intuition caused her project to go totally off the rails.
Secrets and Lies
The author was heading up a project in an organization that employed a balanced matrix, meaning she and functional managers of various resources shared equal power. In order to complete her project, she needed the help of someone who was a resource under another functional manager. But that functional manager had a stipulation that if you wanted to talk to her resources (“her” being the functional manager), you had to go through her only. The author could only have indirect contact with the resource she needed.
The functional manager assured the author that the resource was working on the author’s project. The author was unconvinced, but she chose not to listen to her intuition. When the time for project delivery arrived, the author discovered that the resource had never even been made aware of the project, and thus had done no work on it. The functional manager was later demoted for deceptive behavior like that.
The author says in retrospect that there should have been checkpoints in place to avoid a situation like that. But nevertheless, her point stands that when the project is at stake, you probably cannot afford to silence your intuition.
